About the album

“The recording of this CD I can describe as one of my most beautiful and most exciting musical experiences. I always enjoy playing with my sister Jelena, but this time our bonding rose to an even higher level of empathy, and it became a search for new and adventurous artistic expression.“

Inspiration, imagination and improvisational ideas led both musicians to new musical lines that Vivaldi and Barrière might have use. The continuo got more autonomy in the musical interaction.

The French cellist and composer Jean-Baptiste Barrière started his career as a privileges by King Louis XV at Fontainebleau. To his Majesty he wrote several sonatas which are still known for their sensitivity and fine tonality, their emotional resonance and deep sonority.

Three books of chamber music by Antonio Vivaldi present exquisite sonatas with fine melodies and expressive harmonies. Jelena and Ljerka Ocic present three of those which both loved most.

Jelena Ocic

The striking cellistic art of Jelena Ocic has met with standing ovations on three continents. Energetic, poetic, virtuoso, her playing is a rich kaleidoscope of colours and emotions. Bernard Greenhouse, founding cellist of the great “Beaux Arts” Trio, lauded her as “one of the most remarkable cello talents today”. The late Siegfried Palm, a major figure in 20th century music, called her “one of the most promising interpreters of New Music”.   Her chamber music partners have been Bernard Greenhouse, Konstanty Bogino, Ulrike-Anima Mathé, Federico Lovato, Friedemann Eichhorn, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Yuri Gandelsman, José Gallardo, etc…. She concertizes internationally as a soloist with chamber and philharmonic orchestras and as recitalist in Eastern and Western Europe, in the United States and Asia....

Numerous composers (Cornell, Dott, Sorg, Prohaska, etc.) have dedicated works to her. At the Musikhochschule in Mannheim, where she is a member of the faculty since 2004, she is spearheading projects in performance for cellists, and in the composition and interpretation of new music for cello for composers.

Antonio Vivaldi

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was an Italian Baroque composer, virtuoso violinist, teacher and cleric. Born in Venice, he is recognised as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe. He composed many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than forty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons. Many of his compositions were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi (who had been ordained as a Catholic priest) was employed from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to 1740. Vivaldi also had some success with expensive stagings of his operas in Venice, Mantua and Vienna. After meeting the Emperor Charles VI, Vivaldi moved to Vienna, hoping for preferment. However, the Emperor died soon after Vivaldi's arrival, and Vivaldi himself died less than a year later in poverty.

Ljerka plays the big organ subtily and fantasticly colors the cello of Jelena
Luister, 03-2-2014

(...) one can not help but admire the improvisatory orchestral textures the Ljerka manages to achieve on the organ.
Early Music Review, 01-2-2014

An intensive interpretation like this that the croation sisters are offering here might not be something for everyone, but they handle to create 80 minutes of bristling emotional tension.
